Compared to other African countries such as Togo or Uganda, the standards in Namibian hospitals are significantly better, but even here there is often a lack of hygiene. The gap between rich and poor is particularly wide in Namibia. There is no state health insurance. People therefore have to take out private insurance or pay for their treatment. Well-trained doctors and nurses are particularly needed in medical facilities. By volunteering, you can help to improve the situation on the ground and provide support.
Volunteering in a hospital
In Windhoek, you can work in various clinics and hospitals. Depending on your previous knowledge, you can choose to work in ophthalmology, dentistry or obstetrics, for example. What is important here is that you are a trained doctor or nurse. This way, you can get straight down to work as a fully-fledged employee. First, you will get to know your place of work and your colleagues. After that, you will be assigned according to your previous knowledge. The tasks can therefore vary from participant to participant. An independent way of working is very important for your volunteer work.
Volunteering in physiotherapy
As a trained physiotherapist, you can treat patients with nerve damage, physical disabilities or injuries in a Namibian hospital. At the beginning of your volunteer work, you will accompany the specialists on site to gain insight into their treatment methods. After that, you will perform exercises to promote muscle building and motor skills with the patients. With children, the exercises are designed to be playful. Muscle massages may also be part of your responsibilities.
