Many kindergartens and schools in Zanzibar are struggling with financial difficulties: Up to 70 children are in one class, making it difficult for teachers to cater to the children's individual needs and the premises and teaching materials are often insufficient. This results in a relatively low standard of education.
There are no school fees, but the children's parents have to pay for exercise books, books, writing materials and school uniforms, which is often not possible for families who have many children. Some children are also needed for work, for instance on their parent's farm. Therefore many children don't attend school at all.
We can arrange volunteering placements in various schools, kindergartens and childcare facilities. All institutions have a real need for volunteers and look forward to your support!
Your responsibilities as a volunteer include (depending on the institution):
* You support the teachers with teaching at class.
* To provide extra help to children who need more attention.
* In Zanzibar, children learn letters and numbers at kindergarten level (e.g. through singing or clapping games). You can bring in your own ideas and make learning more interactive and exciting.
* After an orientation phase, you can also teach yourself, depending on your interests and skills, e.g. English, math or sports.
* At some facilities, in the afternoons you can offer play and leisure activities, or provide homework assistance.
