Your school and the goals of your project work
Our outreach school for children with autism was founded in 1970, making it the oldest of the five state-recognized autism schools in South Africa. The school is located on a 1.5 hectare site in a suburb of Cape Town. More than 130 pupils are taught here. The school also offers further training for teachers in dealing with autistic children.
The aim of your project work is to assist a local teacher. With your help, individual attention can be given to individual pupils and learning can be made easier. In this way, you will contribute to improving the facilities offered by the institution.
Your tasks at the school in Cape Town
As a volunteer at an autism school in Cape Town, you will primarily support the teachers and assist them where help is needed. The understaffed teachers are happy to have your support. You can help prepare and organize lessons, design worksheets, sing and play with the children.
Another task is to look after the pupils and supervise them during break times. Depending on your previous knowledge and any skills you may already have, you can also work in other areas. Special needs teachers and psychologists, for example, can complete specialist internships in the therapeutic field or in teaching.
Your day-to-day work at the school
You work at your school from Monday to Friday. The working hours are from around 08:00 to 14:30 or 15:00. During your lunch break, you can enjoy your meal and get to know your colleagues better or simply relax.
