Teaching at a primary school

Pays d’action: Ghana, Afrique
Type d’activité: Enseignement
Ghanaian schools face many challenges – a lack of staff and teaching materials, and very large classes. You can help to overcome these hurdles. Support local teachers and give students better prospects for the future.

Description du projet et du rôle des volontaires

Your places of work and the goals of your project work
Our primary schools are located in the Ghanaian capital Accra. As a volunteer, you will work either at a state or a private institution. Most of the children come from difficult family circumstances or needy families. The facilities are very different. Most schools lack teaching materials and the number of teachers is insufficient.

Some campuses are attended by more than 500 children. It may be the case that a kindergarten, preschool or secondary school are also part of your job site. Depending on the size of the facility, the size of the school classes also varies between 15 and 35 students.

The aim of the project work is to improve the local educational situation through your volunteer work. With your commitment, it is possible to respond to the individual needs of the students.

Your tasks at a school in Ghana
At a primary school in Ghana, you can take on a variety of tasks. You support the teachers in taking care of the children, prepare worksheets and help the teachers with the design of the lessons. Above all, you give the children your attention, because there is often no room for individual support in Ghana's schools.

You prepare the lessons together with the local teaching staff. You are welcome to contribute your own ideas. Depending on your previous knowledge, you may also have the opportunity to teach the students independently at some institutions. However, a contact person will always be at your side.

If you see that you can be useful in a particular area or are particularly good at something, then contact the responsible teacher. Together you can, for example, take care of the organization of projects and school materials.

Your working day at the school
As a volunteer at a school, you work from Monday to Friday. The exact working hours depend on your job site and will be discussed with you on site. As a rule, your day at school starts around 8:00 am and ends in the early afternoon between 2:00 and 3:00 pm. In between, you have a lunch break, which you can spend with your new colleagues, for example.
