Volunteer work in a marine conservation project in Italy

Pays d’action: Italie, Europe
Type d’activité: Ecovolontariat
Since the marine ecosystem is under massive threat, for example from overfishing or the huge amounts of waste in the sea, on the beaches and coasts, it is imperative that we take countermeasures. In order to raise awareness among people for marine and environmental protection, data must be collected and the population must be educated with the help of the data sets obtained.

Description du projet et du rôle des volontaires

Location:
There are two ports not far from the project site. The town center is full of shops and boutiques. A market is held every Tuesday and Saturday morning, which is also very popular with people from the surrounding area.
There are so many great things to do in Italy: hiking, climbing, diving, eating out, playing sports, relaxing on the beach, sightseeing. You should definitely visit Lake Garda during your stay, because on the one hand it offers beautiful nature and on the other hand many beautiful excursions that you can take in the surrounding area. Of course, Italy also has a lot of history, for example the Colosseum or the archaeological site of Pompeii. Since Italian cuisine enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide, you can also go out for a delicious meal in the cafes and restaurants.

A typical day:
As long as the weather conditions allow it, you will spend every day at sea. Wake up time is between seven and eight in the morning. After breakfast, the boat sets off to do research and to navigate. Both the volunteers and the researchers are divided into sighting shifts to ensure that the possibility of a discovery is constantly guaranteed. The time between sightings can vary from a few minutes to a couple of hours, so meal times are also flexible. Once a whale has been sighted, it is followed for several hours in order to collect and record a wide range of variables and information. Weather permitting, the ship may spend a night at sea for research purposes. If the weather is bad, the anchor will be dropped in a harbor for the night. During the day, you will also have time to relax and even swim, weather and work permitting.
