Project description: Forest conservation
During your volunteer stay in Costa Rica, you will have the opportunity to actively contribute to the protection of the country's forests. You will also have the grounding experience of a relatively isolated lifestyle that affects nature as little as possible and brings you back to your roots.
Arrival in Costa Rica.
You will need to organise your own travel to the reserve. Juan Santamaría International Airport and Tobías Bolaños International Airport are close to the project site. A combination of taxi and bus of your choice will take you to San Gerardo. There, a staff member will pick you up and take you to the reserve.
Volunteer activities.
Usually, volunteers work about 6 hours per day every working day.
Typical tasks:
- Assist researchers (e.g. with data entry)
- Data collection on nature walks
- Constructing and maintaining paths, buildings and furniture
- Welcoming and informing guests of the reserve
Accommodation at the reserve.
You will be accommodated in a shared room. There is a shared bathroom and a shared kitchen. The accommodation is equipped with electricity and Wi-Fi. There are hammocks in the outdoor area. Everyone is assigned cleaning and recycling tasks. You are responsible for your own food. This includes getting the groceries as well as preparing the meals.
Leisure time in Costa Rica
On the territory of the reserve you can enjoy waterfalls, go for walks or observe wildlife. On a hot day, the cool river is perfect for a swim. In the nearest village you can shop, try authentic food and talk to the locals. Hiking enthusiasts will be in their element in this area. If you prefer to take it easy, you can use the thermal springs nearby to relax.
Weekends are usually off. Many travelers use this time for a trip to the beach or other destinations in Costa Rica.
