In the small village of Muungoni in the south of the island of Zanzibar, near the road connecting Zanzibar Town and the coastal towns of Paje, Jambiani and Michamvi, there was no school until recently, so the children had to walk to school to the neighboring village of Kitongani. But thanks to the commitment of a citizens' initiative and from volunteers of the volunteering organization active here, two school buildings have now been built in Muungoni. One is for children aged 4-6 (lessons are from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and the other is for children aged 7 to 10 (lessons from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
The teachers are all villagers trained by Mohammed, who has a degree as a teacher. Mohammed is financing the schools through income generated by his ecotourism project ZALA Park, which is also located in Muungoni. Unfortunately, however, the income is low and also fluctuates depending on the season and as a result, many necessary and basic things are still lacking at the schools.
Muungoni is a village in the area of the Jozani Forest National Park that has changed little for centuries, as it doesn't have any beach with tourist hotels. Most of the villagers are fishermen and farmers. As a volunteer in the school, you will be a welcome member of the village community and you can gain insights into a traditional rural life in Zanzibar that hardly exists in Zanzibar Town and at the more touristic places.
The area is an important ecosystem with the largest zone of rainforest and mangrove forest in Zanzibar. If you are interested, you can also take part in various environmental protection activities that we carry out in the area as part of our "Mother Nature" volunteer program with international volunteers.
The rates given below are for one person and include our service package + accommodation with meals (description of accommodation & meals can be found at the end of the project information).
