The animal welfare organization was founded in Zanzibar in 2009 and maintains a shelter as well as a veterinary clinic on a large compound in rural Eastern Zanzibar. The shelter mainly gives home to dogs, cats, donkeys, goats and cows. At the veterinary clinic of the organization, the animals receive all necessary treatments. On Saturdays, the clinic is also open to the local communities and their pets, to provide medical care. Treatments include vaccinations, surgeries, wounds and injuries or sterilizations.
The organization is committed to promote animal’s rights and welfare, overall of those animals who are kept for work purposes, e.g. donkeys. Donkey carts are an important mean of transport in Zanzibar. However, the carts are often overloaded and the animals are exhausted. The welfare organization does not only provide regular medical care to these donkeys but also provides information related to the protection of the donkeys to their owners as a way to raise the appreciation for their animals.
The organization also runs activities to reduce the numbers of stray animals in Zanzibar and actively promotes the develops legislative proposals for the Zanzibari Government.
Volunteers can involve actively in all areas of the welfare organization, such as:
-Care and feeding of the animals
-Assist at the veterinary clinic
-Prepare of study materials on animal welfare and animal care
-Support the organization in fundraising
For students of veterinary medicine we can arrange internships for university credit at this organization.
