The working hours are usually from Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm. The project can be reached by public transport from the volunteer accommodation. Please note that the shelter is located 30 kilometers outside of Arusha and the travel time is about 1.5 hours each way.
In Tanzania, dogs are mostly kept as working animals, mainly to guard the property and house. Many Tanzanians lack understanding of the animals' needs and how to take good care of them. There are also many street dogs that are in very poor health.
We work together with a local animal shelter that mainly cares for former street dogs. They are often brought to the shelter in poor health with the aim of caring for them and then rehoming them.
They also have a veterinary clinic to treat animals from outside the shelter. The income generated in this way flows directly back into the project. The long-term plan is to build more shelters for the animals in order to be able to take in even more animals. In addition, vaccination, sterilisation and castration campaigns with veterinarians are carried out at regular intervals, where every helping hand is urgently needed.
You can get involved in various areas of the shelter, daily tasks include providing the animals with water, food and medication, going for walks or playing and training the dogs and cats.
As the shelter is financed purely by donations, you can also support the project in fundraising.
You can take care of the street dogs and cats and gain a lot of experience of your own.
Either way, you will give the animals a better future and have a great time with us in Tanzania.
