Volunteering in a marine conservation project

Pays d’action: Afrique du Sud, Afrique
Type d’activité: Missions avec animaux et vétérinaires
Do you love the ocean and are fascinated by marine animals? Then get involved in this project to preserve South African biodiversity and help protect marine animals! The coast of South Africa is home to 43 species of marine mammals, but their habitat is threatened by pollution and overfishing. By volunteering, you can help protect them!

Description du projet et du rôle des volontaires

About the Marine Life Project
With your volunteer work, you support a foundation that is committed to the protection of marine animals. The facility is located on the coast, in the middle of the world-famous Garden Route region. The Indian Ocean is home to orcas, great white sharks, dolphins, penguins and sea turtles. Your place of work not only protects the animals, but also raises awareness among the population for animal and nature conservation. It also strives to improve the local educational situation, for example.

Your tasks in the Marine Life project
You can get involved in a number of different areas: animal and nature conservation, education and teaching, research and data collection.

animal and nature conservation

Your tasks may include helping to rescue marine animals, enabling sea turtles to lay their eggs in a protected area, or cleaning and planting beaches. These measures are designed to protect the coastal region from erosion.

educational work and teaching

There are also environmental programs at local schools where you can get involved. You educate students about the need for wildlife and nature conservation. You can also help in English classes and improve the local educational situation.

Research and collect data

If you are interested in research, you can accompany the team when they go out to sea by boat. There you will observe whales and dolphins, take photos and collect data that will later be entered into an online database. In addition, the water quality will be checked and the seabird population recorded, for which the animals will be numbered.

Another area of responsibility is, for example, taking care of international guests. Here you can help organize adventure tours.
Students also have the opportunity to conduct their own research project together with local researchers.

Your daily routine in the marine life project
Your activities depend on various factors, such as the weather, the season and the needs of the place of work. As a rule, you will work on the project from Monday to Friday from around 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
You can use your weekends to take advantage of the numerous leisure activities in the area. Skydiving, diving, horse riding and much more await you in South Africa!
