Volunteering in a primate conservation project

About the primate project
As a volunteer, you will support the ape sanctuary of a non-profit organization. Around 500 primates live here. Your assignment location carries out various programs, such as a research program for the environment and primate research and an education program.
The aim of the center is to raise orphaned baby monkeys, rehabilitate sick animals and, if possible, reintroduce them to the wild. In addition, the habitat is to be preserved and awareness of it is to be raised among the population.

Your tasks in the primate project
Your volunteer work will be wide-ranging and varied. You will support the team on site in caring for the monkeys. This includes preparing their food from nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits and leaves. You will also take on cleaning tasks, such as cleaning the enclosure and feeding bowls.
Observing the monkeys is also one of your tasks. If an animal behaves strangely, it may be a sign that it is sick. If this is the case, you will assist with the medical care of the animals in the infirmary at your place of work. Other areas of work include educating the public and fundraising. Here you can get creatively involved and, for example, help design the newsletter of your place of work!

Your daily routine in the primate project
Your workday will vary from day to day. Your exact tasks will be assigned to you by the project staff. Some tasks are seasonal. For example, from November to February is baby season. During this time, you will mainly take care of the baby monkeys. You will bottle-feed them and nurse them back to health. From March to October, the grown-up monkey children are then integrated into the monkey troop.
In your free time, you can go on safari in Kruger National Park or explore South Africa's capital, Pretoria.
